Real Mexican Street Tacos: 15-Min Weeknight Win

  • Author: Grace
  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Authentic Mexican street tacos made in just 15 minutes with quick-cooking meat, warm corn tortillas, and a tangy cilantro lime crema. Perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20) or shredded chicken
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1215 small corn tortillas
  • 1/2 cup white onion, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
  • Lime wedges for serving
  • Jalapeños or salsa (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine sour cream, lime juice, chopped cilantro, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt. Whisk until smooth and set aside.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with a splash of olive oil.
  3. Add diced onion to the skillet and cook for 2 minutes until softened.
  4. Add ground beef (or shredded chicken) to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula.
  5. Add chili powder, cumin, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Stir to coat the meat.
  6. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until meat is browned and cooked through with some crispy edges.
  7. Warm tortillas in a dry skillet for 30 seconds per side or microwave wrapped in a damp paper towel for 30 seconds.
  8. Assemble tacos by placing meat on warm tortillas, topping with diced white onion and cilantro.
  9. Drizzle generously with cilantro lime crema and squeeze lime wedges over the top.
  10. Serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, toast the chili powder and cumin in the dry pan for 30 seconds before adding the meat. Keep tortillas warm in a clean kitchen towel or foil. The crema can be made up to 3 days ahead. If using low-fat sour cream, the crema may split; use full-fat for best results.
