Description
A creamy, comforting baked chicken cordon bleu casserole featuring tender chicken, smoky ham, and melty Swiss cheese baked into a golden, bubbly dish perfect for easy weeknight dinners.
Ingredients
- 3 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 1.5 pounds / 700g), cut into bite-sized pieces
- 8 ounces sliced ham (225g), deli-style or leftover holiday ham
- 8 ounces shredded Swiss cheese (225g), or Gruyère as a substitute
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (45g)
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour (24g), or gluten-free flour/cornstarch for gluten-free version
- 2 cups whole milk (480ml)
- ½ cup heavy cream (120ml)
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (100g), preferably panko
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Cut the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chicken and cook for 5-7 minutes until cooked through and starting to brown.
- In a medium saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
- Slowly whisk in milk, then add heavy cream and Dijon mustard. Continue whisking until sauce thickens, about 4-5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large mixing bowl, combine sautéed chicken, diced ham, and shredded Swiss cheese.
- Pour creamy sauce over the mixture and gently stir to combine. Transfer to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread evenly.
- Sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly over the casserole. Optionally, drizzle melted butter over breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden brown.
- Let casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
Use fresh shredded Swiss cheese for best melting results. Drizzle melted butter over breadcrumbs before baking for a crispy topping. Season in layers for deeper flavor. Assemble ahead and bake later, adding extra baking time if baking from cold. Leftovers reheat well with a splash of milk to restore creaminess. For gluten-free, substitute flour and breadcrumbs accordingly.
